Beautiful walks starting or ending at Littleport Station.

Ely Station to Littleport Station

stunningly gorgeous; This is a lovely route, and by far the best of the three options. A lovely route that follows the River Ouse for most of the way through open country, then wiggles into the city centre, taking in housing, Ely Country Park and common land. Mostly off-road and flat along the exposed flood bank, with several stiles and gates and a short steep embankment; muddy in places after rain. Follows the River Ouse, passing through Ely Country Park and common land rich in vegetation and wildlife. Facilities in Ely and Littleport but little en route.

10km.

Two footpath crossings of railway lines without automated barriers, one on a bend with poor visibility, so listen out as well as look. Several stiles and the likelihood of grazing cattle in the riverside fields. The flood bank is exposed to wind, sun and rain with little shelter.

Highlights: Ely Cathedral.

Lunch: No facilities en route between the two towns.

Littleport Station to Downham Market Station

Flat and straightforward along the river bank, with little shade. The first part beside the busy, noisy A10 is not enjoyable; the route becomes quieter and more pleasant after the river bends away at Denver Cruising Club and though some minor roads are busier than expected. Follows the Fen Rivers Way.

19km. Gentle ascents.

Loose dogs were encountered near a property around 1km south of Denver Sluice, one of which bit a walker; the minor road between Ten Mile Bank and Denver Sluice was busier than expected; little shade on hot days.

Lunch: The Jenyns Arms pub at Denver Sluice now appears to be permanently closed, so carry your own refreshments.

A straightforward-to-follow route that includes road sections.

Tough: 26km. Flat terrain.

Sections between Hockwold, Lakenheath and Sedge Fen are on dangerous roads and not considered safe; the route is not recommended.
