Annan Station to Gretna Green Station
sweeping views. Quiet lanes out of Annan join a lovely footpath along the Merse beach, then cut inland through Eastriggs. The middle section follows the fast B721 to Rigg and after which quieter country lanes and easy pavemented roads lead into Gretna.
15km.
Between Eastriggs and Rigg the route follows the busy, fast B721 with no real alternative; careful attention to traffic is required.

Dumfries Station to Annan Station
Leaves Dumfries through riverside and castle parkland, then quiet country roads and a riverside footpath into Glencaple, followed by a long section on the B-roads (B725 then B724) with good verges and broken up by quiet rural tracks. Includes the longest climb of the day on a quiet road. Ruthwell has a small museum worth a stop. Geese, swans and other birdlife abound in the roadside fields.
33km.
Long stretches of B-road walking; the B725 is relatively quiet with good verges, but the B724 becomes busier approaching Annan.
Lunch stop: Queensberry Bay Holiday Park café.
