Garelochhead
Ardgartan Loop Firth Of Clyde by Russell-Davies

Garelochhead to Helensburgh Central (Dunbartonshire)

45 minutes direct from Crianlarich.

Recommended: A hill route using much of the Three Lochs Way, with a steep initial climb through woods, then uphill above the Gare Loch with nice views. The long central section follows a paved road through a valley near overhead lines and before a footpath crosses a heather-covered hill and descends on quiet wide streets into Helensburgh. Follows the Three Lochs Way. Nice views over the Gare Loch and the river Clyde in good weather.

Time: 4h30–8h30

Lunch: Only the post office in Garelochhead for early-morning supplies; little en route.

Warnings: Crosses a Ministry of Defence firing-range danger zone; only available when there is no firing (check the Scotland firing times before setting off). A fence near the top is trickier to cross than a usual stile.

Walk details: Slow Ways.

Taynuilt to Bridge of Orchy (Argyllshire)

45 minutes direct from Crianlarich.

Recommended: Great scenery for much of the route; some good views of the mountains around lower Glen Etive. A long, remote and committing walk on forestry and estate paths along Loch Etive and up Glen Kinglass, climbing to nearly 300 metres. The higher sections are rugged with wet boggy ground, slippery rocks, numerous stream crossings and a couple of rickety bridges and before joining the rocky West Highland Way to Bridge of Orchy. Sheep and cows along the way; can be very exposed in poor weather. Joins the West Highland Way for the final section over the hill from the Inveroran Hotel to Bridge of Orchy. Wild-camping spots exist beside the river near the Glen Kinglass junction, by Loch Dochard and near the Inveroran Hotel. Reviewer suggests starting at Bridge of Orchy puts the harder terrain early. The Oban and West Highland lines have infrequent services.

Time: 11h30–22h30

Lunch: No facilities along the way; come fully provisioned.

Warnings: A long, exposed and committing route with no escape options if bad weather hits; good footwear and full weather kit essential. Wet boggy sections, slippery rocks, multiple stream crossings and a rickety bridge or two on the higher ground. Cows with calves graze some fields, so keep dogs under close control. Sparse, infrequent train services at both ends need careful planning. Can be muddy.

Bridge of Orchy
Walking To Beinn an Dòthaidh by Russell-Davies

Bridge of Orchy to Tyndrum Lower (Argyllshire)

30 minutes direct from Crianlarich.

The views, it almost goes without saying, are wonderful; a spectacular route; Beautiful scenery; lovely; the colours were really gorgeous. A short, simple and relatively undemanding walk following a section of the West Highland Way, mostly flat through fields with generally good or very good surfaces. The route tracks the A82 and the railway line through spectacular Highland scenery at the base of two mountains and swapping sides via sheep tunnels and bridges. A few cows at one point. Follows a section of the West Highland Way, signposted along the way. The 914/915 Citylink bus connects the two ends but should be booked in advance. The railway crosses two small viaducts on a loop.

Time: 3h–6h

End-of-walk reward: Tyndrum has several stores and restaurants, including the Green Welly.

Helensburgh Central
Rhu and Shandon Parish Church by Redhand1872

Helensburgh Central to Arrochar and Tarbet (Dunbartonshire)

30 minutes direct from Crianlarich.

Northern section is very enjoyable with amazing views over Loch Long; excellent views. A route forming roughly half of the Three Lochs Way, with a very enjoyable northern section of amazing views over Loch Long, a less enjoyable middle third on a tarmac road through an MOD training area and a final descent on quiet single-track road and new footpath through woodland into Helensburgh. The ground can be sodden in the second section from Tarbet. Comprises about half of the Three Lochs Way, running between Inveruglas and Balloch. Passes the famous Mackintosh-designed Hill House.

Time: 9h–17h30

Warnings: The Tarbet end is currently closed for overhead-line works with a signed diversion (likely until 2026). About a third of the way involves fording a small stream beneath a railway where a bridge has been removed. The ground from Tarbet can be sodden, so walk in drier weather.

Oban
Oban Twilight by Rollingstone1

Oban to Taynuilt (Argyllshire)

45 minutes direct from Crianlarich.

A very pleasant and easy route. A pleasant and easy-to-follow walk that climbs steeply out of Oban past McCaig's Tower (with a flight of steps), then follows footpaths and tracks through fields before a long, very quiet single-track road through Glen Lonan, alongside the river, woods and hills, with Ben Cruachan in view. Mostly tarmac and which can be hard on the feet over 12 miles. Passes McCaig's Tower above Oban. Red deer, buzzards and dragonflies can be seen along Glen Lonan.

Time: 5h30–10h30

Warnings: The first road out of Oban has a fair amount of traffic, requiring crossing sides to stay on the outside of bends. Apart from a short section at the Oban end, the route is all on roads.

Walk details: Slow Ways.
