Colchester Town Station to Wivenhoe Station

lovely estuary town of Wivenhoe. A varied route along the River Colne through a nature reserve, mostly flat with muddy patches, becoming more urban but staying off the main roads. One steep section with shallow steps; some narrow and nettle-filled paths. The first section follows the Wivenhoe Trail along the River Colne, passing through a nature reserve.

Easy: 6km, moderate ascents.

A couple of road crossings need extra care due to a lack of dedicated crossing points and fairly fast traffic. The path approaching Hythe Quay, covered in duck boards, can flood knee-deep at times. Some paths can be blocked by fallen trees or overgrowth.

Bures Station to Colchester Town Station

Outside urban areas, uses footpaths and very short sections of country lanes and avoiding B-roads without footpaths. Some paths are overgrown or ploughed and require care to pass.

17km. Moderate ascents.

Some paths have overgrowth access issues, and ploughed paths require care to cross the overturned soil.

Lunch stop: the Three Horseshoes.
