Rochford Station to Southend Central Station

A short route that begins on a footpath between the River Roach and Tinker's Lane, then becomes increasingly urban on pavemented streets and quieter side roads and finishing along a pedestrianised high street. Southend Victoria station is passed near the end, so the route can be shortened.

Easy: 6km, gentle ascents.

Leigh-on-Sea Station to Southend Central Station

lovely sweeping views across the estuary. A mostly flat, easy and relaxing seafront walk on wide paths, much of it suitable for wheels, through the pedestrianised parts of Southend and along the sea front. The Cliffs park section near Southend has steps and steep slopes through gardens and along the clifftop and which can be avoided via a slight diversion or the cliff funicular railway. There are toilets and plenty of benches along the seafront. A cliff funicular railway (limited opening) links the seafront to the high street for those avoiding the steps. The Crow Stone obelisk on the seafront marks the end of the Thames Estuary.

Easy: 6km, moderate ascents.

At high tide and in stormy weather the sea comes close to the path along the seafront.

Lunch: Many places to stop for refreshments along the way, including pubs, restaurants, cafes, tea houses and seafood stalls in the old port of Leigh and along the seafront.
