East Grinstead

East Grinstead to Edenbridge Town

About half the route is alongside roads, much of it quiet or private lanes and with the middle four miles mostly through fields and farms and a clearly-set path through Jules Wood. There are uphill sections of mud through the woods and some high stiles.

Time: 3h30–7h

Warnings: Sections of mud on the uphill woodland paths after rain. A river bridge near Ockhams has heavily worn steps up to the fields that need care, especially when wet. Some stiles are high.

Edenbridge Town to Sevenoaks

Particularly nice views. A quiet, pleasant route through fields and often woodland with very little road walking, on quiet lanes. The section crossing the Greensand Ridge rewards a climb with particularly nice views. Steep slopes and stiles abound and with a couple of sections of significant winter mud near Edenbridge. Crosses the Greensand Ridge. The only useful local public transport is a tourist-hours bus to NT Emmetts Garden.

Time: 4h30–9h

Lunch: Ide Hill also has a small community shop, and the Pheasant Plucker on Wheatsheaf Hill is a short detour.

Warnings: There is an access problem on two woodland tracks off Back Lane which are not public rights of way and carry emphatic landowner and logging warnings; public rights of way through the woods and lanes between Back Lane and Brook Place should be used instead. Can be muddy.

Walk details: Slow Ways.

Oxted
UK - Surrey - Near Woldingham - Road over train line by JulesFoto

Oxted to Edenbridge Town

A pleasant route mostly through farmland, with quiet streets at the Oxted end. Some road walking, mainly along quiet lanes and a few field paths that are hard to follow with few signposts. The railway crossing south of Hurst Green can be avoided using paths north of the railway bridge.

Time: 3h–5h30

Lunch: Good facilities at Edenbridge and Oxted, and a convenience store at Hurst Green.

Warnings: Pavements in Edenbridge swap sides frequently along the busy B2026. The A25 must be crossed before Oxted, though there is a central reservation and traffic lights nearby. Field paths can be hard to follow; GPS is useful.

Walk details: Slow Ways.

Edenbridge Town to Tonbridge

A pleasant walk following the Eden Valley Walk and Wealdway through woodland, across fields and past streams, lakes and reservoirs, with gentle inclines and descents. Can be very muddy, sticky and slippery after wet weather; steps, stiles and narrow bridges and some sections are overgrown. Follows the Eden Valley Walk / Wealdway for most of its length. Passes Penshurst Place and Hever Castle (little of which is visible from the walk) and the Tonbridge miniature railway. Toilets are scarce, probably only at Penshurst.

Woodland: a quarter under tree cover.

Time: 5h–10h30

Lunch: A pub at Penshurst about halfway, and a pub at Hever.

Warnings: A short stretch approaching Hever requires walking up a relatively busy road; mind the barbed wire on narrow sections. Can be muddy.

Walk details: Slow Ways.
