Sandwich Station to Deal Station

lovely route; Beautiful, straightforward walk along the coast. A flat, easy-to-follow coastal walk, much of it off-road. It starts beside the River Stour, crosses two white-painted footbridges and raised paths across flat fields, then crosses a golf course over the dunes to the sea and finishing along the beach top and a concrete promenade past the pier. Some sand dune and pebbly sections. For almost its entire length the route follows the well-signposted and waymarked Saxon Shore Way.

Easy: 9km, gentle ascents.

There are stiles and kissing gates where the path crosses the Royal St George's Golf Club, and access to the promenade north of Deal is down a short flight of steps.

Lunch: No facilities along the way, but plenty at either end.

Deal has shops and restaurants; the cafe at the end of the pier is recommended.

Canterbury East Station to Sandwich Station

Pleasant, green and fairly quiet out of Canterbury, with a footpath shadowing the A257; flat and easy. Almost entirely footpath after Black Pond Farm into Sandwich and but with a longish stretch on a B-road (Fleming Road) with regular traffic.

Tough: 22km. Gentle ascents.

Minster Station to Sandwich Station

gorgeous views across the bay. A flat route with a good deal of walking beside or close to busy roads and passing through Pegwell Bay Country Park with its reedbeds and small lakes. Passes through Pegwell Bay Country Park, which has reedbeds and small lakes. Cafes and public toilets at the country park car park.

Easy: 9km, gentle ascents.

There is no pavement on Jutes Lane and it runs close to the busy A256; this route involves a lot of walking beside or near busy roads.

Lunch: A few cafes and public toilets at the Pegwell Bay Country Park car park.
