Easy: 2km, flat terrain.

Lunch: Very well supplied for refreshments, with the curry houses of Brick Lane, street food and wonderful places to eat throughout.

Cambridge Heath Station to Stratford Station

A varied and thoroughly enjoyable city walk, largely off-road and fairly direct, mixing pavement, park, canal towpath and plaza. Flat surfaces almost throughout, with safe crossings of major roads; the only steps are at the Stratford end (avoidable by lift) and the canal bridge has sloped/ramped access. Refreshments and transport available in Hackney Wick and Victoria Park.

Easy: 5km, moderate ascents.

A footbridge over the Hertford Union canal at Roach Point has been closed for replacement; the lock gates offer an alternative crossing. The route passes through the Olympic stadium security/ticket checkpoints, unsuitable on event days. Victoria Park is closed at dusk. Steps at Stratford (avoidable by lift).

Lunch: Refreshments available in Hackney Wick and Victoria Park.

Cambridge Heath Station to Heron Quays Station

An interesting walk through London's East End and Docklands, balancing aesthetics with easy navigation and avoiding most main roads. Mixes wide flat streets, a stretch of Regent's Canal towpath, riverside Thames Path and a park; the canal is largely unlit. Good for wheels and with some steps near the building works at Canary Wharf that have a lift alternative. Passes the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster memorial (Stairway to Heaven), Stepney City Farm (cafe and Saturday market), and the Ragged School Museum. Staying on the canal through Mile End Park makes the walk greener.

Easy: 4km, gentle ascents.

The Regent's Canal towpath is largely unlit and feels uneasy in the dark. There may be access issues where the route passes through a building at the Canary Wharf end if it is closed; a temporary closure of the riverside path beyond Canary Wharf Pier requires a short signed diversion.

Lunch: Food and drink at various points around Stepney and Mile End Road, plus at both ends.

Dalston Junction Station to Cambridge Heath Station

An easy, low-traffic urban walk on pleasant leafy streets and cobbled back streets, taking in a park, a short stretch of the Regent's Canal towpath and a lively market. There are steps to access and leave the canal. Now mostly within a low-traffic neighbourhood. Broadway Market and London Fields are very busy at weekends; free public toilets at the Martello Street entrance to London Fields. Look out for street art along the cobbled back streets.

Easy: 3km, flat terrain.

Lunch: Plenty of places to eat and drink at Broadway Market and at both ends of the route.
