Flat canal towpath, disused railway line, heathland commons, North Downs Way, open fields, mixed woodland and the barren Ash Ranges.

Ash to Worplesdon
Basingstoke Canal towpath, hilly MOD heathland (Ash Ranges), pine-covered heath, farmland tracks, mixed woodland, open common and mature woodland on Whitmoor Common.

Ash to Guildford
A varied route taking in canal towpath, fields, woodland, some hills and town walking, beginning along the Basingstoke Canal at Ash Vale and with a fiddly wooded section at Ash and a final ridge giving views over Guildford. The stretch near the A31 isn't ideal. East of Puttenham the route follows the North Downs Way under the A3 at Watts Gallery, where there is a tea shop. As you descend The Mount into Guildford you pass Lewis Carroll's burial spot.
Woodland: a quarter under tree cover.

Ash to Brookwood
An easy, almost entirely flat walk along the Basingstoke Canal towpath (after the initial climb up from Ash Vale). Pleasant and shaded by the water and though narrow in places due to undergrowth and muddy after rain.
Waterway: almost all along the Basingstoke Canal.
Time: 4h (2h30 walking, 1h30 lunch)
