Walks from Warminster

Chalk downland, Iron Age hillforts, five hills, Salisbury Plain military range, abandoned village and sweeping views over Wiltshire and Somerset.

Fabulous walking through interesting places and with some lovely views. Wonderful varied walking on back lanes, field paths and well-used dirt tracks and climbing onto the chalk plain for lovely views. A short steep climb out of Fonthill Gifford; a muddy bridleway through Eastleigh Woods toward Warminster (a drier signposted alternative exists).

Warnings: A stretch along the fast, relatively busy B3089 east of Hindon has no verge; the crossing of the A303 needs care and patience (sightlines are good).

Long views. Hill and moorland paths with woodland and with moderate climbs.

Time: 2h30–5h

Walk details: Railwalks.

Excellent views of Cley Hill. A generally pleasant route following the River Frome, then open countryside on field tracks and quiet roads with crops and before a final 1.75-mile stretch along pavements beside a busy road into Warminster. Excellent views of Cley Hill; a couple of fields are easier to walk round the boundary than across.

Warnings: Cattle and 'Beware of the Bull' signs in some fields. Care needed crossing the busy two-lane A361. The footpath has been rerouted around Heath House Farm, which can cause confusion.
