Uttoxeter Station to Burton-on-Trent Station
the wildlife and the views are breathtaking. A long, direct and easy-to-follow route leaving Uttoxeter on the Staffordshire Way, following footpaths by the River Dove, then crossing country to Burton via several villages. Lots of stiles and gates, many in poor repair and plus a steep climb to a stile near Burton. Cattle fields along the Dove. Leaves Uttoxeter following the Staffordshire Way. Passes Fauld Crater, an awe-inspiring crater from a single explosion, now wooded, with an information board and memorial. Pubs at roughly 5.9km (with a shop), 9.2km, 11.2km and 17km; multiple shops and eateries at both ends.
21km.
The road from Marchington through to Houndhill Farm has no pavement and requires caution; at Hound Hill there is no verge and you may have to walk on the road relying on cars to avoid you. Many stiles and chained gates need clambering over. A level crossing of the Crewe to Derby line.
Lunch: Pubs at intervals along the route (around 5.9km with a shop, 9.2km, 11.2km and 17km), plus a farm shop and pub at Draycott in the Clay and two pubs in Marchington.
