Penkridge Station to Landywood Station

A mostly safe, fairly direct walk via towpath, lanes and pavement, including a pleasant stretch along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and open, empty lanes with Cannock Chase as a backdrop. Some footpaths are passable but overgrown and with stiles and steps. Follows the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal towpath. Little public transport west of Hatherton.

12km.

Crossing the A5 can be tricky, and there is a road crossing at Hatherton that requires caution. Footpaths from Wedge's Mills to Cheslyn Hay require improvisation as locals' routes don't follow the rights of way.

Rest stops are mainly at the Great Wyrley end.

Bloxwich Station to Landywood Station

An entirely urban, flat, direct route on pavements with no offroad sections or stiles. After residential streets in Great Wyrley it joins the A34 and follows it almost the whole way and with open farmland to either side on the approach to Bloxwich. Step-free and easy underfoot.

Easy: 5km, gentle ascents.

Much of the route runs beside the very busy A34. The west pavement disappears for a stretch beyond Turnberry Road, so stay on the east side.

Cannock Station to Landywood Station

A direct, safe route mainly on residential street pavement and alongside the A34 and crossing the M6 Toll by footbridge. Not particularly pretty but easy to follow.

Easy: 4km, moderate ascents.

The footbridge over the M6 Toll has been closed on the south side with no official notice — the only alternative is the A34 crossing of the toll road.

Great Wyrley has shops and a pub, and a small retail park with restaurants and a supermarket just before Landywood Station.
