Trentham Gardens by Audrey A Jackson

Stoke-on-Trent to Stone (Staffordshire)

6 minutes direct from Longton.

Recommended: A direct, almost entirely flat waterside route along the Trent and Mersey Canal towpath. Surface varies from good bonded gravel to loose stone and with cobbled ramps at the roving bridges and a stepped bridge near Stone station. Generally dry with only the odd puddle after rain.

Waterway: almost all along the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Belper
Belper Mill Tilt Shifted by Stuart Lilley Photography

Belper to Derby (Derbyshire)

45 minutes direct from Longton.

Good views, lots of interest; the weir at Darley Abbey is spectacular. A straightforward, well-walked route through the Derwent valley, mostly following field and riverside paths with some pavement and quiet village-road sections. Varied countryside with steps, stiles and some mud and plus a short stretch on roads without pavements or verges. The flood-plain section near the A38 can be affected after severe weather. Mainly follows the Derwent Valley Heritage Way through the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Well served by buses for bail-out at intermediate points (Duffield, Little Eaton).

Time: 4h–8h

Lunch: Refreshment options at Makeney, Duffield, Little Eaton and Darley Abbey, with a pub at each of Makeney and Duffield, and shops, a cafe and a pub at Little Eaton.

Warnings: About 900m is on roads without pavements or verges, though these are mostly quiet village roads. Steps and stiles throughout; some mud. Long grass encroaches in places, so tick precautions are worth taking. The section between the A38 and Darley Abbey is on a flood plain and can be affected after severe weather.

Walk details: Slow Ways.

Kidsgrove
Lawton Hall Lake, Cheshire by philept1

Kidsgrove to Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire)

15 minutes direct from Longton.

Mostly Trent and Mersey Canal towpath, with a woodland-and-road section over the hill around Harecastle Tunnel through Bathpool Park. The canal offers great variety, passing industrial relics and modern development and with steps at the Kidsgrove end and some shallow mud but a lot of good surfaces.

Waterway: four fifths along the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Time: 3h–6h

Warnings: Crossing the road in Kidsgrove needs care — no proper crossings, just raised road sections. Steps from Kidsgrove station car park to the towpath. The towpath is shared with the 555 cycleway and is narrow in places.

Crewe
Meadow Brook Cemetery by Charliebubbles

Crewe to Alsager (Cheshire)

15 minutes direct from Longton.

A direct, varied and enjoyable route mixing pavements, country lanes and footpaths through fields and woodland. The first stretch out of Crewe is along busy roads and dual carriageways with good pavements; the countryside footpaths are well marked with many kissing gates and no stiles and but can be very muddy after rain. At Hall o' the Heath the farmer has redirected the footpath away from the marked right of way. Look out for a 125-year-old waymarker and a vintage petrol pump in the woods.

Time: 3h–5h30

Lunch: Shops, pubs and takeaways in Crewe, Haslington and Alsager.

Warnings: Fields near Hall o' the Heath and Crewe Green may contain cows and calves that can be agitated; take care, especially with dogs. At Hall o' the Heath several footpaths converge and an electric-fence gate must be opened, so concentration is needed. Can be muddy.

Walk details: Slow Ways.
