Walsall to Cannock (Staffordshire)
30 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Remarkable survivals (Pelsall and Pelsall North Common). Greenway paths, common land, woodland and field edges. Former mining country with industrial heritage; route follows McClean Way greenway on former South Staffordshire Railway.
Time: 4h–8h
Warnings: Follows a busy road for a sixth of the walk. Barbed wire fencing; complicated road sections with M6 Toll crossing.

Stone to Stafford (Staffordshire)
9 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Boggy muddy ground at wetter times of year. Stafford Common is an unusually large surviving common land near a major Midlands centre with origins in medieval townland for grazing, protected by parliament 1839 and 1939.

Warnings: Comparatively busy road at Whitgreave; boggy ground when wet.

Penkridge to Stafford (Staffordshire)
9 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Impressive views across southern and central Staffordshire landscape. Walk traverses Staffordshire countryside from Penkridge to Stafford via the ruins of a neo-gothic manor on the site of Stafford's medieval castle.

Warnings: Busy road near Penkridge; care crossing main roads near Stafford.

Water Orton to Tamworth (Warwickshire)
15 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Mostly on canal towpaths. Through Anglo-Saxon Mercia's territory, passing sites associated with Queen Æthelflæd.
Waterway: four fifths along the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal.
Time: 4h30–9h
Warnings: Heavy traffic on narrow ancient bridge across River Tame near Water Orton.

Black Lake to Walsall
30 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Canal towpaths throughout — rough track, grassy banks, tarmac sections — passing under multiple road and rail and motorway bridges. Follows the Ridgacre Branch Canal, joins the Walsall Canal, and finishes at the canal basin beside the New Art Gallery in Walsall town centre.
Waterway: almost all along the Walsall Canal.
Time: 3h30–6h30
Warnings: One dismantled footbridge requires a small detour via lockgate or road-bridge gap.

Tamworth to Polesworth (Warwickshire)
15 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
Recommended: A very easy, level walk almost entirely along the Coventry Canal towpath, on compacted-stone towpath and pavement, with no gates or stiles. A short noisy section leaving Tamworth and then quiet side streets and open countryside. Passes the Hodge Lane Nature Reserve and Pooley Country Park (public toilets at the visitor centre). The Staffordshire–Warwickshire border is a stream crossing under the canal.
Waterway: four fifths along the Coventry Canal.
Time: 2h–4h
Lunch: A pub at Alvecote Marina, roughly midway. Pubs and shops at the Polesworth end; eateries and shops in Polesworth village.
Warnings: The road into Tamworth can be quite busy mid-afternoon. Polesworth has just one train a day.

Atherstone to Hinckley (Warwickshire)
30 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.

Atherstone to Nuneaton (Warwickshire)
30 minutes direct from Rugeley Trent Valley.
A relaxing, easy-to-follow route mainly along the Coventry Canal towpath and with short pavement sections through the towns at each end. The towpath surface varies and can be muddy in places. Follows the Coventry Canal; passes canal marinas, evidence of quarrying and an information board on the possible site of Boudica's last battle. A direct train links the two towns.
Waterway: four fifths along the Coventry Canal.
Time: 2h30–5h
Lunch: Shops and a variety of supermarkets in Nuneaton, with stops and shops at both ends.
