Middlesbrough Station to Redcar Central Station (Yorkshire)

15m direct from Eaglescliffe.

A direct route from town centre to beach through a semi-industrial landscape full of wildlife, running close to the railway line in places. Mostly grassed path with some paved or gravelled sections, plus a metal bridge and steps and anti-bike chicanes; narrow in places and prone to flooding next to a bog. Recommended detours to the Tees Transporter Bridge, the Clock Tower and Locke Park, which has plenty of wildlife and benches.

13km. Moderate ascents.

A 50-metre boggy section is impassable without wellies or hiking boots even in dry weather, with no way to bypass it. The path runs very close to passing trains in places. Can be muddy.

Northallerton Station to Yarm Station (Yorkshire)

4m direct from Eaglescliffe.

A long, demanding rural route through fields, woods and quiet villages, starting well on footpaths to Brompton but becoming very tricky from Ings Beck onward, with no clear paths across hayfields and waist-high grass. Poorly maintained throughout, with blocked or missing stiles, locked gates and overgrown footbridges and ditch crossings. Sections through villages and on lanes are pleasant. Coincides with the Coast to Coast path in places, which provides a clearer alternative around some obstacles.

Tough: 24km. Gentle ascents.

Much of the route is poorly maintained, with blocked or missing stiles, locked or overgrown gates, slurry heaps across the path, waist-high nettles and grass, and unbridged ditches to scramble across; signage is very poor with few finger posts or waymarkers, so careful navigation is essential. Sturdy clothing is advisable.

Shildon Station to Darlington Station (Durham)

15m direct from Eaglescliffe.

lots of lovely nature and panoramic views. A long route mixing town road-walking with field paths and farm tracks across open country, with panoramic views and lots of nature. Many field paths are poorly maintained, lost or heavily overgrown with nettles and brambles and very wet and muddy after rain. Passes under the A1 near Darlington; there is an ice cream shop at Walworth a short detour off-route.

20km. Moderate ascents.

Many field paths are overgrown, lost or blocked and need hacking through nettles; some require detours around farms. Parts cross or run beside the busy A6072 and A1, and the A1 underpass can flood. Tough going for adults and impractical with wheels away from the towns. Can be muddy.

Redcar Central Station to Marske Station (Yorkshire)

30m direct from Eaglescliffe.

lovely coastal walk; the views over to the cliffs at Huntcliffe are superb; views are stunning. An easy, uncomplicated coastal walk starting along Redcar's promenade and the hard-surfaced esplanade and then over grassy dunes on a waymarked path before joining a footpath beside the road into Marske. The dune path can be a little muddy after rain; a roadside pavement offers a fully accessible alternative. An accessible alternative follows the footpath next to the road directly to Marske, suitable for wheelchair users or strollers. Plenty of places to stop for food and refreshments at the finish in Marske.

Easy: 4km, moderate ascents.

Plenty of places to stop for coffee or eat, and independent shops, in the centre of Marske.

Marske Station to Saltburn Station (Yorkshire)

30m direct from Eaglescliffe.

An easy, safe coastal-edge walk on good footpaths through housing estates and an extensive area of allotments and on mainly hard-surfaced track running alongside the railway. A few steep bits and one gravelly part by the fields; mostly a steady climb from Saltburn to Marske. The path through the allotments is a designated bridleway, so dogs should be kept on leads. Could be enjoyed as a circular route, walking back to Marske along the beach when the tide permits. Disabled toilets (keys needed) in Saltburn and Marske.

Easy: 3km, moderate ascents.

Plenty of places to eat near the station in Saltburn, with the Victorian Cliff Lift and beach a short walk away.
