Ulverston to Grange-over-Sands

Views were remarkably extensive, taking in half of the Lake District and large areas of the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire. A long walk on field and woodland paths, farm tracks and a few quiet roads and with one big climb onto the shoulder of Hampsfell giving remarkably extensive views. Some ladder stiles are in poor condition and a large bog must be circumvented; careful navigation needed in places. Follows the Cumbria Way out of Ulverston and the Cistercian Way out of Cartmel; trains run frequently from Grange back to Ulverston (about 15 minutes). Cartmel is worth exploring.

Time: 7h30–15h

Warnings: Several ladder stiles are in poor state, some close to collapse, and there is a large bog to circumvent. The public footpath at Cartmel Racecourse crosses the racecourse and a football pitch. Careful navigation is needed where waymarking is patchy. Can be muddy.

Walk details: Slow Ways.
