Bellshill Station to Motherwell Station

Wide pavements out of Bellshill join the tarmac Bellshill-to-Motherwell Greenway, a multi-use path that runs off-road for most of the distance through woodland, crossing South Calder Water and passing under a tall viaduct. One narrow and muddy track section near Forgewood. Follows the Bellshill to Motherwell Greenway for most of its length.

Tough: steep ascents. 4km.

Near Forgewood the mapped route drops down a steep, muddy, neglected track (overgrown steps, some fallen trees); an easier alternative follows Talisman Crescent back to the Greenway. The Braidhurst Viaduct section feels lonely and some find it intimidating, and lampposts there have been de-activated. Crosses the busy Bellshill Road via a traffic island.

Bellshill Station to Holytown Station

A fairly straight, safe route along Clydesdale Street closely following the railway line, with decent pavements and then playing fields and a path round the back of houses. Not the most scenic.

Easy: 3km, gentle ascents.

The mapped route along Garfield Avenue is blocked: the section from Calder Road is a rough, unmaintained dead end. Detour via Ella Gardens to a footpath that rejoins Garfield Avenue beyond the blockage.

Hamilton West Station to Bellshill Station

Mostly tarmac paths out of Hamilton through parkland and around the edge of Strathclyde Loch, with a short muddy wooded section and a stretch of road without pavement and then suburban pavements into Bellshill.

Easy: 7km, moderate ascents.

A short stretch of Bothwellhaugh Road has no pavement (quiet, with a soft verge); a short wooded section can be muddy.
