A varied route taking in canal towpath, fields, woodland, some hills and town walking, beginning along the Basingstoke Canal at Ash Vale and with a fiddly wooded section at Ash and a final ridge giving views over Guildford. The stretch near the A31 isn't ideal. East of Puttenham the route follows the North Downs Way under the A3 at Watts Gallery, where there is a tea shop. As you descend The Mount into Guildford you pass Lewis Carroll's burial spot.

Some great views of the Hogs Back; the amazing views. A fairly direct route with around a third in open countryside and the rest on town pavements leaving Aldershot and entering Guildford. Great views of the Hogs Back near Wanborough and of Guildford Cathedral or the North Downs on the approach to Guildford and with a tree-lined path on the way in.

Warnings: Two major road crossings require caution: a roundabout junction over the A331 about 2km from Aldershot, and the A31 on the approach to Guildford.

A pleasant, mostly waterside and traffic-free route following the Blackwater Valley path then the Basingstoke Canal towpath, mostly flat and well surfaced with few access issues, just the occasional gate, narrow footbridge and possibly muddy sections after rain. Surprisingly rural-feeling along the tree-lined waterways and though traffic noise intrudes near Frimley. Follows the Blackwater Valley path then the Basingstoke Canal towpath, including the impressive Brookwood flight of 14 locks. No refreshment stops on the route itself.

Brookwood Cemetery: A vast Grade I listed Victorian cemetery with an eclectic mix of religious sections.

A direct route mainly on pleasant, wide, traffic-free wooded tracks and heathland through Swinley Forest and the MOD training area and with pavements in the urban sections at each end. The forest tracks are gravel and can be muddy with areas of waterlogging; no stairs. Passes close to the Bronze Age barrow at Bill Hill and the Lookout Discovery Centre and South Hill Park Arts Centre (both with cafés and toilets). Small detours possible to Caesar's Camp Iron Age hill fort and Surrey Heath Museum.

Lunch: Cafés and toilets at the Lookout Discovery Centre and South Hill Park Arts Centre near the route; town-centre shops and cafés at both ends.

Warnings: The central forest section can be muddy with areas of waterlogging.

Mostly quiet residential streets, narrow lanes and field footpaths and with some stretches on roads that lack a pavement. Largely under tree cover.

Warnings: Braziers Lane has no pavement and only a narrow road edge; make yourself visible to drivers, and reflective clothing helps in poor light.

Good view of The Long Walk with Windsor Castle in the distance. A route mainly following the Three Castles Path through Windsor Great Park, with a short urban walk at Ascot, footpaths and bridleways that can be muddy with exposed roots, wide and smooth tarmac roads through the park itself. The park is quite hilly. Follows the Three Castles Path. The path near the George III statue is often closed during winter, with an easy road detour available. Public toilets and coffee places in Ascot.

The Windsor Great Park: A vast royal deer park south of Windsor Castle, crossed by the Long Walk.

Time: 4h30 (3h walking, 1h30 lunch)

Lunch: Few benches and no facilities within Windsor Great Park; amenities at Ascot.

Warnings: Getting from the Crown Estate into Windsor Great Park involves a busy road crossing with no lights or pedestrian crossing. A footpath near the George III statue is sometimes closed in winter due to poor ground conditions, requiring a detour; park roads are shared with cars, buses, horses and cyclists.
