A good route through pedestrianised streets and the delightful old woodlands of Callendar Wood on well-made paths, then a twisty maze of little paths with steps through the Hallglen Estate, before a calm, tarmac towpath along the Union Canal. It finishes on the busy, noisy Station Road into Polmont; some steps and with likely step-free alternatives in Hallglen. Follows the Union Canal towpath. Callendar Wood is an attractive area of old woodland. Extensive woodland.

Lunch: Lots of cafes and shops in Falkirk; a small shopping centre with a supermarket in Polmont.

Warnings: Several flights of stone steps through the Hallglen Estate. At the Redding Industrial Estate the towpath briefly becomes a road open to cars. The turning off the towpath into Polmont is easy to miss. Station Road into Polmont is busy and noisy.

A route on core paths, cycleways, pavements and minor roads and crossing main roads at traffic lights.

Warnings: The footpath linking Littlehill Golf Club to Acredyke Road (east of Stobhill Hospital) was found overgrown with Japanese knotweed and impassable, not feeling safe underfoot.

An urban route on pavements and core paths and taking in as much green space as possible.

Mostly on a shared cycle and walking path; good underfoot and not too hilly and though quite isolated from housing.

Warnings: Largely away from population, so less suitable for walking alone.

Short route through New Stevenston and Riccard Johnston Park, then a wooded track around the golf course (stony underfoot, sturdy shoes advised) down to South Calder Water and before joining the well-surfaced Motherwell Green Link into town. Quiet and remote in the middle. The final stretch follows the Motherwell Green Link footpath into the town centre. Extensive woodland.

Warnings: The wooded track around Colville Park Golf Course is remote, unlit and rough underfoot in places (some very rough hardcore); it may not suit all travellers walking alone.

A route on paths and grass through woodland and parkland, including Luggie Glen Wood which is shielded from traffic noise and then through Summerlee Heritage Park beside the canal. Should be fine for wheels. Extensive woodland.
